I would like to ask you the most important question of life. Where you spend eternity will depend upon your answer. The question is; are you saved? If you were to die today, would you be sure that you would spend eternity in heaven?
The Lord Jesus said in John 3:7, “Ye must be born again.” This is a command, it is not a suggestion. But, what does it mean to be saved, or born again? How is one saved, or born again? The first thing that you must recognize is your sinful and lost condition.
The Bible says that sin has separated you from God, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23. Also, Romans 3:10 says, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” The penalty for your sin is death, or eternal separation from God in Hell. This fact is seen in Romans 6:23a, “For the wages of sin is death…” Due to the fact that God is holy, righteous, and just, He cannot simply ignore your sin, He must punish it.
But, God is also loving, gracious, and merciful. 2 Peter 3:9 says, “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.” The Lord provided a Savior for you. Jesus Christ died on the cross in your place, taking your sin and its penalty upon Himself. This is a demonstration of God’s love for you. Notice Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” 1 Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God...”
Also God’s love for you is seen in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” But Jesus didn’t only die for you, He rose again the third day, coming back to life and defeating death. The angel told the disciples that first Easter morning, when they came to His tomb and found it empty in Matthew 28:6, “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.”
So, just as the jailer asked Paul in Acts 16:30, you must ask, “What must I do to be saved?” The answer is found in verse 31, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” You must realize your sinful and lost condition, and the punishment you deserve. You must repent and call upon the Lord Jesus to save you, believing that He died for you as seen in Romans 10:9, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Also John 1:12 says, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” So if you believe these truths from the Bible, and place your faith in the Lord Jesus’ death and resurrection for you, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord,” Romans 6:26b. So my friend, are you saved? If not place your faith in Him today.
